SlimServer

Slim Server is “powerful and free Open Source software. Not only will it power Squeezebox, but it also serves the SLIMP3 network music player or any software MP3 player on your network. SlimServer runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, BSD and Solaris.” I’m going to set up the software a little later, and the Squeezebox looks pretty sweet too. Something for the wishlist. Might be the answer to my multi-room audio problems.

  1. SlimServer definitely gets my vote. Another great feature not mentioned here is integration with iTunes. In the SlimServer config, you only need to provide the path to your iTunes db file (On windows it’s under My Music somewhere), and your iTunes playlists are automatically imported into SlimServer. This is a killer feature and I couldn’t find anything that even came close to this level of integration. Now, the only thing I have left is a program that automatically determines ID3 tags from Free-DB.org and a way to share my music files and for family to upload music to my collection.

  2. Just installed SlimServer on my debian box… it rocks! 😀 I’ve been having a little bit of trouble getting more than one stream to work, and due to the buffering in apps like Winamp or WMP (eww) the playlist editing bit isn’t very responsive. And it seems to get a bit confused if you’ve got more than one “streaming” player running. But if you’re running SoftSqueeze (software equvilant of the Squeezebox) the web interface is fantastically responsive!

The iTunes intergration really rocks, that’s definitely the best part.

Now I’ve just got to work on getting a visualisation plugin for softsqueeze going so I can run it on my Media PC 🙂
