Are you going to be allowing domains to be hosted on wordpress.com blogs instead of only subdomains?
Assuming Jonathan is right and WordPress.com is headed toward a get-your-own-space program, I think this would be an excellent idea! Interesting thoughts come to mind. One can get a wordpress.org blog hosted by a third-party (manual installation or using a one-click-away script). Or… just start small with wp.com, then grow big(ger) with your own domain. Now, I’m not sure how search engines will deal with redirections or URL changes… could be tricky… even if done properly by sending HTTP header with status code 301. I heard success stories, as well as ‘Googlejuice’ disasters. But bookmarks shouldn’t be an issue, I think.
We’ve said we’re going to do domain mapping for a while, we’ve been testing it for a few months:

It supports remote domain login, SSL, redirects, and some other neat stuff. There is still some code to be cleaned up around the DNS server and registration UI, which is why it isn’t live yet.
They have been testing this feature for a month or so now – http://wordpress.com/blog/2006/07/30/domain-mapping-testers/. Looks like Om is the first “big” blogger to use the system (at least the first I am aware of).
