WP Designer is switching from Creative Commons to GPL for his themes. (5)

Great. I hope people keep the backlinks, though. He merits them.

I’ve found WordPress users seem to be very good about keeping legit backlinks in GPLed code. I’ve yet to come across a Tarski install that has removed them.

I like Creative Commons licences, but they are designed for text, images etc. rather than software. Just as one would not think of applying the GPL to a textbook, similarly Creative Commons licences should not be used for software (even more ’simple’ software such as WP themes).

the problem comes in precisely because CC licenses are good for images. themes cannot use CC images and GPL code. this almost always leads to a shortcoming in one area or the other. there are notable exceptions of course, but most themes do one or the other better, and are licensed accordingly.
